Macbeth's Lobby Display

If you came and saw our production of Macbeth here at BYU last week or the week before, you would have seen this outside in the lobby:

If you looked closely, you would see that the sign reads: "Beware Macbeth's Story! Do you have something (a fear, worry, etc.) that takes up time in your life? Write it down and throw it into the cauldron to get rid of it. Don't let it consume your life like some of the characters in the play!"

This was an interesting exercise in which many audience members participated. The things written on the little bits of paper ranged from the silly all the way to the serious and personal. It was wonderful seeing the audience engage with the show and apply the themes and lessons to their own lives. Hopefully it served as a therapeutic exercise of sorts, and some people were able to relieve themselves of the worry they feel.

Even though this lobby display won't be traveling with the actors on tour, the children can still engage like this! Parents, if your kids have the opportunity to see Macbeth at their school, ask them the question posed in the lobby display. How do Macbeth's worries and ambitions control his life? How do things end up for him, and how can the children learn from his experience?

Art in Motion is a new show that was conceptualized by three female ballet faculty in collaboration with the animation department director here at BYU. The show beautifully merges animation, music, and ballet to tell the stories of three female artists from history. Those artists are Berthe Morisot, Sofonisba Anguissola, and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

Exposing the Power of the Everyday

When I think of the word powerful, I often associate it with the really unique, rare, extraordinary moments in my life. I envision grandiose gestures or out-of-this-world ideas. However, through my research for BYU’s Art in Motion, three female artists changed my perspective of the word.

Is there really an “edge” to everything“? For centuries, scientists, scholars, and even simple farmers have wondered about space - and how to see, up close, what is so far away.
