"Offstage": The Real World of Rehearsal

by, Bianca Morrison Dillard - Dramaturg At one of our first rehearsals for Holiday, Becca Ingram (Linda Seton) came to make her first entrance. As she entered, she puzzled as to where to put her coat in the scene. She pointed to a chair next to the “door” and said, “What is this, is this a coat rack?” to which the rest of us replied, “No, it’s a chair.” The funny thing is, it was a chair. Not funny? Let me see if I can explain. This story isn’t  funny because Becca doesn’t know what a chair is, it’s funny because in rehearsal things are not always what they seem. A chair can sometimes actually “be” a coat rack. [caption id="attachment_652" align="aligncenter" width="800"]

“Is this a coat rack?”[/caption] Some might see a play and only imagine the actors rehearsing on the ornate set complete with furniture, props, costumes, and fantastic lighting. Not so. Rehearsals almost exclusively take place in an entirely different  location and lack most of the trappings you see in performance. The actors rely heavily on imagination and pantomime. This week will be the first time the actors have had access to the stage, set, props, costumes. As we move into this new stage of rehearsal, I thought it would be nice to share what the bulk of our rehearsal has looked like. [caption id="attachment_653" align="aligncenter" width="800"]

Empty Rehearsal Room[/caption] Our rehearsal space is in a large room where the floor has been outlined with colored tape to delineate where the walls, doors, and furniture will be, with different colors for each room of the set. The “set” is then furnished with chairs, tables, and theatre blocks--this gives the actors a sense of where things will be once they get on stage. [caption id="attachment_654" align="aligncenter" width="800"]

Rehearsal “set”[/caption] In production, the actors will have real props, including liquid to drink and sandwiches to eat. Now they employ pantomime, or use “hand props” (props that they use in place of their real props).

Andrew, Magarin, Becca & Taylor take “bites” of their “party sandwiches”[/caption] [caption id="attachment_656" align="aligncenter" width="800"]

Eric “drinks” from a cup, not very authentic, but it take the place of the glass tumbler he will use in performance.[/caption] Often times, actors & actresses will wear shoes similar in feel to the shoes they will use in performance. This allows them to get used to the walk of their character. The color of the shoe is less important. [caption id="attachment_657" align="aligncenter" width="800"]

Character Shoes[/caption] In our rehearsal rooms there are no real walls to separate off stage from on. [caption id="attachment_658" align="aligncenter" width="400"]

Andrew reviewing his lines “backstage”[/caption] [caption id="attachment_660" align="aligncenter" width="400"]

Eric & Mallory “offstage”[/caption] I hope that gives you a better idea of why a chair being a chair might be funny in the right context--in a world, strange though it may be, where chairs are sometimes coat racks and thin air can be anything you like.

Designing the Realism of 12 Angry Jurors

March 03, 2023 09:54 PM
Before a show opens its doors to audiences, before there are costumes and props, before sets are built and actors are cast, it starts simply as an idea. This idea is known as the ‘director’s concept,’ which a director presents to the designers at the show’s first production meeting. After that, it is the designers’ job to transform that concept from an abstract idea to a physical manifestation that can be seen onstage.

Actor Help: Dramaturgy Website for 12 Angry Jurors

February 23, 2023 11:35 PM
One of the great things about working as a production dramaturg is the time spent in rehearsal working with the actors. For this production of 12 Angry Jurors, we spent quite a bit of time exploring the world of the play. To help the actors interact with the courtroom drama world of Boston in 1953, we created a dramaturgical website for the actors. We put a link to this website on QR codes that were printed and hung throughout the rehearsal space, so that the actors could have access to the website at any time.

Presents and Presence

December 03, 2022 08:05 AM
One of the first things many people think of when they hear the word Christmas is gifts. Gifts and Christmas have been interchangeable for a very long time in our world’s history. But over time, what people think of as gifts has shifted. Each new era or generation defines it differently. There were monetary gifts such as gold, frankincense, and myrrh in the days of Christ, when all things were handcrafted and only the wealthiest of people could have precious ore or spices from distant lands. Or perhaps, during the great wars of the twentieth century, a gift of war bonds was precious when patriotism and the survival of the world made things like toys seem trivial to many. Now, everyone wants the latest iPhone or the newest technology. Throughout our lives, what we want also changes. Gifts shift from toys, games, and candy to technology or clothes–all inconsequential things that provide short-term entertainment. However, all of these things fade and have less impact on our true joy. Joy can really be found in the simple things of life.
