Mother Courage: Shattered Beyond Repair

bloodyhand-300x125.jpg

Hello there. Will you do something for me? Close your eyes for a moment, and imagine your most prized possession. Picture it as clearly as you can. Now, imagine that possession is in the middle of the road. As you watch your possession in the middle of the road, imagine a giant, speedy diesel truck runs over it and smashes it to pieces. As you try and gather up the pieces of your possession, you realize it is useless. It is destroyed beyond repair.

Mother Courage and Her Children is the story of prized possessions being destroyed beyond repair. It is gritty, and dark, and unpleasant. As a Mother tries to keep her children alive during one of the most violent and deadly wars of 1600’s Europe, we are shown what it is like to loose everything. We are shown what its like to be completely helpless, to the whims of something bigger than ourselves. We are shown that war, though often romanticized in every age, may still just be people taking other people’s lives.

As I post these blog posts every week, I intend to take you on the journey of our production of Mother Courage. From providing insights to the mind of Director Dave Morgan, to discoveries made inside the rehearsal space, we will explore what Mother Courage means, and why Brecht wrote it. See you soon.

Designing the Realism of 12 Angry Jurors

March 03, 2023 09:54 PM
Before a show opens its doors to audiences, before there are costumes and props, before sets are built and actors are cast, it starts simply as an idea. This idea is known as the ‘director’s concept,’ which a director presents to the designers at the show’s first production meeting. After that, it is the designers’ job to transform that concept from an abstract idea to a physical manifestation that can be seen onstage.

Actor Help: Dramaturgy Website for 12 Angry Jurors

February 23, 2023 11:35 PM
One of the great things about working as a production dramaturg is the time spent in rehearsal working with the actors. For this production of 12 Angry Jurors, we spent quite a bit of time exploring the world of the play. To help the actors interact with the courtroom drama world of Boston in 1953, we created a dramaturgical website for the actors. We put a link to this website on QR codes that were printed and hung throughout the rehearsal space, so that the actors could have access to the website at any time.
