Director's Note
When I was researching musicals to put on, I threw on Light in the Piazza in my living room, thinking I would just watch the first number and move on. This musical had me in its clutches from the overture. The music was gorgeous and tickled that classical part of my brain that I studied Opera in my first year of college. This musical soars with genuine authenticity and love. It explores romance, creating an old feeling, and finding the beauty in life.
With the extreme desire to put on this play, came the extreme fear and despair that no one would want to be a part of it. Contemporary was more popular among actors, and I didn’t know many designers, so I had no idea how I was going to pull this off. But I have been blessed with a plethora of help.
Not only have my designers put their art into this performance, but so have my crew and cast. What you see is the beloved hard dedication to each of their crafts. Thank you to these hardworking individuals for sharing their talents and making this project come to life. Thank you for believing in my vision. Thank you for your proactiveness. Thank you to family that assisted in making this production come true. Thank you for your art.
This play is usually performed in a large space with grand set pieces to show the beauty and history of Italy. Knowing that this would not be possible I, as well as my designers, decided to set it in a painter’s studio. I love to add my own spin to a story. We wanted to evoke this feeling of being an artist or watching an artist at work. The small space helps the audience see the intimacy and authenticity up close. I hope you leave with the desire to see “What the beauty is” and to understand that we must all fight for our love.
