Hair, Makeup, and Prosthetics for Twelfth Night
The process of creating these characters’ looks starts with the director’s initial concept. Adam Houghton drew a lot of his inspiration for the characters of this show from Teatro Malandro, a theatre style developed by Omar Porras.
The makeup designer, Maitlyn Wright, took note of the concept and started brainstorming. Maitlyn created an initial concept response where she presented pictures that would later inspire her final creations.
After this, Maitlyn presented her initial designs and breakdowns what each character will look like and the materials that will be used.
Then from there, she honed in her concepts and ideas into a final design. Actors were introduced into the process and Maitlyn took pictures so she could add her designs onto the pictures of the actors. She then presented her final renderings, which is what we see on the actors during the show.
Maitlyn then called in the actors and created the moulds of noses and teeth that are seen in the show on the actors!
